The most argued premise of legalized abortion was that it would help reduce child abuse and unwanted pregnancies. However, in a widely read study conducted by Dr. Phillip Ney, on the connection between abortion and child abuse, he notes:
“… elective abortion is an important cause of child abuse.”
“Recent evidence indicates many women harbor strong guilt feelings long after their abortions. Guilt is one important cause of child battering and infanticide. Abortion lowers women=s self-esteem and there are studies reporting a major loss of self esteem in battering parent…” (Source: P. Ney, M.D. “Relationship between Abortion and Child Abuse.” Canada Journal of Psychiatry, vol. 24, pp. 610-620″ reprinted in Roe v. Wade 26 years of life denied.) http://www.prolife.org
I wholly agree with Mary White that, “An abortion is performed on a living woman who has a life in which a terminated pregnancy is only a small part. Morally speaking, the decision to have an abortion doesn’t take place in a vacuum. It is connected to other choices that a woman makes in the course of an adult life.” (291)
Moreover, although abortion, viewed in its most humane perspective, may seem to be an unparallelled recourse to an unplanned, unexpected or wanted pregnancy, the pro-choicers almost religiously neglect to educate women, and the public at large, of the long-term psychological and physical ill-effects, sometimes leading to the untimely death of a young woman.
In an article entitled, “A List of Major Psychological Sequelae of Abortion,” copyright 1997 Elliot Institute Compiled by David C. Reardon, Ph.D., there are several duly noted instances wherein post-abortion clients required psychological treatment
“In a study of post-abortion patients only 8 weeks after their abortion, researchers found that 44% complained of nervous disorders, 36% had experience sleep disturbances, 31% had regrets about their decision, and 11% had been prescribed psychotropic medicine by the family doctor.” (Source: Reprinted http://www.afterabortion.org/psychol.html)
The article continues to enumerate several other ill effects of abortion, including, but not limited to:
- Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD or PAS)
- Sexual Dysfunction
- Suicidal Ideation and Suicide Attempts
- Increased smoking with Correspondent Negative Health Effects
- Alcohol Abuse
- Drug Abuse
- Eating Disorders
- Child Neglect or Abuse
- Divorce and Chronic Relationship Problems
- Repeat Abortions
In addition to all these medical anomalies, careful consideration must also be given to the increased risks of medical malfeasance of botched abortions and post-abortion complications such as hemorrhaging and punctured organs.
In an article, “Legal Abortion puts Women at Risk,” Dr. Jorge Carreon, a longtime South Gate obstetrician and gynecologist, referring to abortion facilities, said, “We call them chop shops.” “They are legal, but they are practicing medicine that is below the standard of care.” (Source: Doe v Bolton Crumbles – http://www.prolife.org) The article is further comprised of many such statements from individuals decrying the negligence in conducting legalized abortion which results in horrific consequences.
